Landmark Feeds Poultry Team

First established in 1954, Landmark Feeds had its early beginning in the Manitoba poultry industry and has since grown to span Western Canada. The Landmark Feeds Poultry Team provides poultry growers with a comprehensive package of high quality feed, customized service, innovative products and industry support.

Research Initiatives

Landmark Feeds is committed to providing leading edge feed and technical services to the poultry industry in Western Canada. Research facilities at the University of Manitoba and the 850-acre Shur-Gain facility in Burford, Ontario provide the research foundation for Landmark’s innovative poultry feed products and programs.

Working together to develop products and programs that result in profitable commercial results, the Research Farm is a committed group of highly qualified scientists, nutritionists, technologists and statisticians. The research group develops and validates a broad range of new products, programs and technologies that are implemented across the Shur-Gain and Landmark Feeds organizations to the benefit of our customers. Every program is tested, verified and proven under working farm conditions. Through enhanced nutrition, we dedicate our operation solely to maximizing livestock and poultry producers’ productivity and profitability.

Barn Monitoring Systems & Benchmarking

Landmark Feeds takes great pride in introducing and implementing emerging practices and new technologies in the poultry industry. Assisting poultry growers in implementing barn monitoring processes in their barns is just an example of such practices in the Landmark organization. We believe that in order to be as effective as possible in this industry, it is necessary to act not on bias or belief, but instead on operation specific data. By using barn monitoring reports and data, we work with you to analyze your operation and assist you in identifying your operational objectives and plans. Landmark Feeds will then work to help you reach your goals, based on identified measures for improvement.

Marketplace Innovation

It is essential, in today’s marketplace, to work as closely as possible within a strong team of professionals and organizations dedicated to the poultry industry. At Landmark Feeds we believe that innovative products and programs are critical to enhancing and advancing poultry production in Canada. We work hard to develop and implement these products and programs in the marketplace.

Landmark Feeds is committed to promoting the poultry industry in Canada. We work hard to introduce and implement innovative animal and poultry nutrition solutions to all of our growers. If you would like to speak to a Poultry Specialist about any of our nutritional programs or products, please contact us or your local Landmark Feeds Poultry Specialist.

Water management in Broiler and Turkey production

One of the fundamental challenges in our modern poultry management is not energy, protein or even the proper amino acid balancing of diets. All twenty-first century nutrition providers meet or exceed breeder specifications for targeted performance and productivity indices. The forgotten element in the equation is almost always water related!

Volume of water expressed to the chick or poult (Landmark Feeds recommends a flow rate of 20 ml plus the age of the bird as a targeted pressure/minute) is the first area of concern as too much precipitates wet litter conditions and too low a pressure restricts hydration and ultimately affects feed consumption and conversion.

The quality (Source) of the main water entry is paramount to the overall performance of the young flock. Dugout sources can be challenged with Clostridia, e-coli or enteritidis, particularly in spring run off periods. Shallow and even some deep wells can offer their own oscillating quality concerns throughout the year, forcing the modern technical service provider to be armed with two very simple meters.

A reliable Ph meter allows our team to not only measure line Ph, but also show bio-film restrictions from drinker to drinker. 30 minutes in the barn allows a pertinent “snap shot” of build up potentials and efficacy of cleaning.

The Oxidation Reduction Potential, read in millivolts, is the second meter required to access the ability of the water to mitigate e-coli or even mineral bio-film (such as iron content) restrictions throughout the house. Driven by the inclusion of either Hydrogen Peroxide or Chlorine in the system, this acts in synergy with a product like Combi-Acid. (It is important to consult a Landmark Feeds technical advisor to avoid unpleasant plumbing mistakes and certain peril in prematurely mixing these chemical elements!!!) These two tools are carried by all field personnel, and most of our progressive barn managers own and utilize their own on daily barn monitoring.

The targets we have developed with most broiler and turkey genetics companies are as follows:

PH target 6.5 (Most prairie water starts at between 7.8 and 8.5)

ORP 450 mv No kill of e-coli
ORP 500 mv 1 hour to kill e-coli
ORP 550 mv 100 seconds to kill e-coli
ORP 600 mv 10 seconds to kill e-coli
ORP 650 mv 0 seconds to kill e-coli

The other component in this exciting water system break through is the line cleaning prior to placement of chicks or poults. I like a non-chlorinated product like “Proxi-Clean” if chlorine is line introduced. But if you line flush with a free-chlorine based product, then use Hydrogen Peroxide based components in the line, then use a chlorine based line flush. It more completely baffles any unwanted micro flora throughout the water system, allowing optimal growth, performance and eventual profitability for our growers.
